Looking to jump-start sales of its PlayStation 3 game system, Sony (SNE) has cut the price by $100, to $499, and plans to introduce a $599 package with a larger (80-gigabyte vs. 60-GB) hard drive and one game next month.

According to a Mercury News report, Microsoft will switch to a 65-nanometer production process, meaning new consoles will feature smaller microprocessors and graphics chips as opposed to the 90-nanometer processors found in current models.
The smaller, more cost-efficient 360 innards will add a range of benefits to the system, while lower production costs would also facilitate any plans for a future price drop.
If these new production methods are implemented, overall console reliability would be increased. The risk of overheating, an issue that has strongly been linked to the three red lights of death failure, would also be reduced, while more space would be freed up inside the console itself. The report speculates that this new space could be used to house the current brick of a power supply that comes with 360s.
Microsoft is reportedly in the process of qualifying the new Falcon chips and motherboard, with 360s containing Falcon innards expected to hit retail this fall.
“We have a bunch of different projects that cost reduce and improve quality as you find issues, as does our competition. Once you get millions in the field, you learn about the box under all kinds of different circumstances, you can adjust and tweak what you do accordingly,” said Peter Moore, head of games at Microsoft, when questioned about Falcon.

Oh, don't act so surprised. Was there ever really any chance that would let get a free ride for long on price cuts and start swiping console sales? Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter doesn't think so, and he's come out with predictions of price cuts across the board for the , in response to . Michael expects the Elite to drop from $479 to $399, the Premium to sink from $399 to $349, and the Core to fall from $299 to $249. He seems to think it's connected with the Xbox 360 shipment shortage of late -- which could just as well be caused by a , but his price-cut logic probably isn't far off either. Unfortunately for those of you waiting for a console to make less of a dent in your wallet, Wedbush Morgan doesn't expect the Wii or DS prices to move by the end of the year, as sales remain strong for those two.
